Sword and sorcery fans, rejoice! Animation icon Genndy Tartakovsky—the brilliant mind behind masterpieces like Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, and Primal—is finally bringing his dream project to life.
According to an official announcement at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Tartakovsky is firmly partnering with Cartoon Network Studios and Prime Video to develop a brand-new, adult-oriented Conan the Barbarian animated series.
A Long-Awaited Dream Project
For Tartakovsky, this project is a true labor of love that has been nearly two decades in the making. The director revealed that he has been actively pitching a Conan cartoon since 2008.
"The world wasn't ready," Tartakovsky shared in a video message during the announcement. "But now, after adult Samurai Jack and Primal, it is prime—not just Prime Video, but prime for this story to come to the screen." Given how much Primal wore its Robert E. Howard influences on its sleeve, Tartakovsky is arguably the only animator working today who can truly do the Cimmerian justice.
Story Details: "Queen of the Black Coast"
The highly anticipated series will not replace any future live-action movies but will instead carve out its own legendary path. The narrative foundation will heavily adapt Robert E. Howard’s iconic classic story, The Queen of the Black Coast.
The plot will dive deep into Conan's iconic romance with the fierce pirate queen, BΓͺlit. Together, the battle-hardened barbarian and his lover will defy gods, fate, and dark sorcery threatening their survival. Tartakovsky will serve as both the primary showrunner and executive producer.
The Collector's Take
While scripts and outlines are currently in active development, the studio dropped a stunning first-look teaser poster showing a rugged, scowling Conan illustrated in Tartakovsky's signature, sharp-edged animation style. Between the visceral action of Primal and the narrative depth of Howard's books, this has the potential to become the definitive on-screen adaptation of the character. Expect more details to surface soon at San Diego Comic-Con!
